Bloomers, on Route 9 in Malta, NY, offers diners a delightful combination of French, American and Asian-inspired cuisines. Owners Linda and Michael Bauer have dedicated the Art Deco-style diner to the memory of blues and rock guitarist, Michael Bloomfield. The restaurant has an extensive array of Bloomfield memorabilia on display. A Visit to Bloomers

By Allen Bloomfield

On August 23rd, 2008 I was joined by David Dann and Laurie Knoop for dinner at Bloomers, An American Bistro, in Malta, New York. We went because Michael and Linda Bauer have created an exceptional restaurant dedicated to the memory of my late brother Michael Bloomfield. We were not prepared for the experience that was to unfold.

First off, the restaurant is in a historical Art Deco stainless steel diner which has been expanded to accommodate their ever-growing clientele. Inside every stainless facing is glowing, reflecting a lost art in metal forming. This is coupled with a massive oak bar which runs the length of the diner. Beautiful micro spots highlight the bar in a soft, calming light. Wherever one looks the interior is immaculate. Roomy booths, comfortable seating, white linen, sparkling glassware all complete the period diner. Mike and Linda have collected some of the most impressive photographs that I have ever seen of my brother. They are hung with the same care that the interior reflects.

Granted Bloomers has received rave reviews for their food since they opened. I consider myself a foodie and my brother was a haut foodie. The creative staff of three chefs span classical French, Nuevo, traditional American cooking that can hold its own with any top Manhattan restaurant. Kobe beef burgers are so popular patrons take them to go. I had a sweetbreads appetizer that was so succulent and generous that it could not be improved upon. My main entree was a lobster medley, fresh whole lobster and assorted seafood topped with a giant prawn in a light cream sauce. In fact the animated conversation ceased completely when the eating began. I was drinking a house chardonnay that was crisp and cool. My friends had a choice of world class beers which they raved about. The meal ended with a simple flan – golden custard afloat in amber syrup. We all shared this delight.

Clearly I was as overcome by this complete experience as were my friends. Mike and Linda have created a living memory to my brother in such fine form and loving attention that I encourage anyone traveling to Saratoga for the turning of the leaves or the running of the races to make it a point to visit Bloomers. I assure you , you will not be disappointed. Visit their Web site for a tour and a full menu.
